Wildcats' Scoring Efficiency Sets NCAA All-Divisions Record Twenty-Seven Points in 79-Second Span is Tops All-Time in NCAA Football
The Wildcats scored 27 points in a span of one minute, 19 seconds during the second quarter of their 61-33 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory over the Wolves at Tomlinson Stadium. Senior wide receiver Nate Brookreson (Lacey, Wash./North Thurston HS) had a three-yard reception to start the score at the 14:04 mark, followed by the first of two interceptions by freshman cornerback Brandon Kennedy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) 16 seconds later. A 12-yard fumble return by sophomore Josh Chance (Battle Ground, Wash.) at the 12:58 mark was the third touchdown, with Kennedy's second pick on the first play of Western Oregon's next drive coming with 12:45 remaining in the half.
Kennedy's final score gave the Wildcats a 48-13 lead at the time.
According to the NCAA statistical services, no team in the association's history had scored more than 21 points in such an abbreviated time span.
The Wildcats' 34 points in the second quarter and 55 in the opening half were both school records. The previous records had been 33 in a quarter (vs. Mary, 1995) and 52 in a half (vs. Western Oregon, 1989).
Central Washington, 6-2 overall and 4-0 in GNAC play, looks to clinch its second consecutive conference championship as it visits Western Washington this Saturday in the 10th annual Cascade Cup.
