University of Puget Sound One Of Nations Best Athletic Programs


TACOMA, Wash. - On the strength of two national top ten finishes this winter the University of Puget Sound climbed to 13th in the United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup Standings released today. Puget Sound has the highest ranked athletic department in the Northwest Conference and owns the distinction of being the top rated NCAA Division III athletic department from the western United States.

University of Puget Sound winter athletic teams finished their respective seasons among the nations best. The Loggers finished fifth in women's basketball, ninth in men's basketball, thirteenth in women's swimming, and twenty-fourth in men's indoor track and field among all Division III institutions.

The Loggers accumulated 247.75 points based on team performances over the winter, giving Puget Sound 350.75 points for the year.

The United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Alabama, is in its first year sponsoring the program. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports -- nine women's and nine men's. Each national champion receives 100 points.

Seven-time champion Williams College (Mass.) currently holds the top spot in the rankings.
