MATHIESON RESIGNS TO BECOME AD AT MERIDIAN HIGH SCHOOL
Special teams coordinator/linebackers coach leaves after two-year stint at Western
BELLINGHAM, Wash. --- Adam Mathieson, the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach on Western Washington University football staff, has resigned to become the athletic director at Meridian High School, Viking head coach Robin Ross announced today.
Mathieson, a former player for the Vikings, was entering his third season as an assistant on the Western staff. He had previously been the quarterbacks coach.
“I appreciate the hard work Adam put into this program for me and (former head coach) Rob Smith, both as a coach and a player," said Ross. "We wish him the best of luck.”
Prior to arriving at Western, Mathieson coached for five years at Ferndale High School. As the head coach in 2003, he directed the Golden Eagles to a 9-2 record, a Northwest League title and the quarterfinals of the Class 3A state playoffs.
Mathieson, who received a bachelor’s degree in history at Western in 1999, was a three-year letter winner for the Vikings, being the starting free safety as a senior in 1997. As a junior he helped Western to the best season in school history, when the Vikings posted an 11-2 record and advanced to the NAIA Division II National Championship game. As a freshman and sophomore he played under Ross, who then was Western’s defensive coordinator.
Ross said that the search for a replacement will begin immediately.
